I'm looking to add a bit of memory to MySQL on a Linode VPS server on which I've got a small facebook (canvas app) PHP app using MySQL running. I'm not super familiar with MySQL optimization so I'm hoping to find a simple answer. I think I want to increase the key_buffer size (the default is 16M) to something like 32M to start, but I'm not sure if I need to tweak anything else as well. All I've done so far is increase the query_cache_size to 32M from 16M.
There's also key_buffer under [mysqld] and key_buffer under [isamchk]. What are the difference between those two?
If I have Linode 2048MB (http://www.linode.com) VPS, what would recommend I set the buffers to? I don't expect this site to have tons of visitors, but I'd like it to be as optimized as possible. Definitely way more heavy on the database access than PHP and very few HTTP requests.
hi,
I have a Ruby on Rails web application running on my computer (Ubuntu 10.04) that I'd like to be able to access from a remote machine. My server is mongrel but I have no problem installing another if it helps. How do I set things up so I can access my web application from a remote machine?
On my firewall I've three interfaces :
eth0 : public IP (46.X.X.X.)
eth0:0 public IP (46.X.X.Y.)
eth1 : public IP (88.X.X.X.)
eth2 : private LAN (172.X.X.X)
I've setup a basic NAT which works great until I turn on the eth1 interface, I basically loose the connectivity. When I turn off the interface (ifconfig eth1 down) then the NAT re-work.
I've added some policy routing via iproute, which makes my three public IP's available.
I don't understand why turning on eth1 on makes the LAN unavailable.
PS : weirder ; when I turn on eth1 BUT remove the NAT, then the firewall is accessible by using the public IPS. So to me it's exclusively a NAT issue, since without the NAT the network works while with the NAT without the second public interface, the NAT does work.
Regards
EDIT :
I've been able to make it work by using iproute2 rules. That was definitely a routing issue. Here is what I did :
ip rule add prio 50 table main
ip rule add prio 201 from ip1/netmask table 201
ip rule add prio 202 from ip2/netmask table 202
ip route add default via gateway1 dev interface1 src ip1 proto static table 201
ip route append prohibit default table 201 metric 1 proto static
ip route add default via gateway2 dev interface2 src ip2 proto static table 202
ip route append prohibit default table 202 metric 1 proto static
# mutipath
ip rule add prio 221 table 221
ip route add default table 221 proto static \
nexthop via gateway1 dev interface1 weight 2\
nexthop via gateway2 dev interface2 weight 3
I have a dual boot configuration: Windows 8 Consumer and Ubuntu 11.10.
I tried to install the Asus drivers for my motherboard (P8Z68-V LE EFI) in windows 8, and i now get bluescreens when starting windows.
Holding F8 or Shift-F8 doesn't seem to be working, so is there another way to get into Safe Mode, or uninstall the errant driver?
I need to get into Safe Mode in windows to fix the issue.
Things I have tried:
Disabling overclock
Holding F8 or Shift+F8
How can i get GRUB 2 to boot windows 8 in safe mode?
Or is there another way to disable a driver that is making it impossible to boot?
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Server in VMWare Fusion (on a Mac) and I'm having trouble changing the console resolution. It seems to be stuck on 640x480.
Ubuntu 9.10 uses Grub2, so there is no /etc/grub/menu.lst.
I tried adding vga=791 to the kernel parameters (both during boot and by adding it to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub and then running update-grub2) and neither had any effect.
When using vga=791, grub says that vga=791 is depreciated and that I should use gfxpayload=1024x768x16,1024x768 instead. However, that also does absolutely nothing.
I have a feeling this problem is specific to running Ubuntu 9.10 in VMWare, but Google hasn't turned up anything.
can anyone provide me with the dumps and useful documents for sun solaris SA-200 S10 and SA-202 S10. Please mail me with the latest dumps on my ID: [email protected]

Here is my IPCONFIG /ALL from the host (Windows 7 64-bit):
Here is my IFCONFIG from the guest (Ubuntu 10.04):
To be honest, I don't have experience configuring a network between a host and a guest in VMWare (a virtual machine). I've searched high and low on the internet, but I haven't seen anything that can help. Perhaps I'm just not using the right keywords when I search. Nevertheless, does anyone here have any experience with establishing a network connection?
Edit: One important note. I don't use DHCP to provide private addresses to the hosts on my LAN. I use "static" IP addresses on my internal network by configuring each IP address manually in the host's network configuration utility (I have TV's, XBOX 360, and a few PC's). I would like to configure the IP on the virtual machine guest manually as well. The reason is because my XBOX 360 only works properly using a static IP address. It will kick me off XBOX Live if it has one given by the router (via DHCP).
I am running Top to monitor my server performance and 2 of my java processes show virtual memory of upto 800MB-1GB. Is that a bad thing?
What does virtual memory mean? And oh btw, I have swap of 1GB and it shoes 0% used. So I am confused.
Java process = 1 Tomcat server + my own java deamon
Server = Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic)
Here is a video on this link

Someone among my bosses wants to create some thing similar to the video on above link and has asked me what software can they use to do the same. The purpose is to create educational content only.Which can have the demonstrations (animations ) and audio also running in backend. I am not clear as what software can be used for this on Linux or Windows. I have users which use Windows and Linux both. I have used video editing on Mac using Final Cut Pro but the video on the above link is not some thing which can be achieved with FCP.(Or may be I am not aware)
I am looking solution for
1) Linux users
2) Windows users
In case of Linux it is Ubuntu for some users and Fedora for some others.
I am a Linux guy so I am specifically posting this question in terms of Ubuntu but I also need suggestions for Windows type of users.I have no clue of such video animations at all.

Hello.
I've noticed that directories' permissions for my automounted USB hard drive formatted in NTFS in Ubuntu 9.10 are 700. This is inconvenient for me. On Ubuntu 8.04 LTS it was 777 everywhere and it was good. Where can I change those default automount permissions for such a drive?
Thank you.
I have a Sony Vaio FW350 with a HDMI output. I'm trying to use it under Ubuntu 9.10 with a LG LCD monitor 21,5'. The laptop has a Intel 4500 video card. I've tried two approaches:
Boot the laptop with the HDMI cable connected and monitor turned on. Result: LCD Monitor keeps turned on but the whole screen is black and Ubuntu do not seem to be initializing.
Boot Ubuntu until the end. I then connect the HDMI cable into the Laptop. The mouse and the whole system freezes.
In both cases the only way to turn off the laptop is holding the power button.
I've looked around the internet for similar problems, but only found workarounds for the same problem with VGA input, not HDMI.
I also tried to use metacity before connecting the cable, but still got the same result.
Any hints?
I'm having a problem installing the drivers from the video card. Just finished installing the driver, reboot my OS, and my monitor is starting off in energy saving mode and does not boot Ubuntu.
What I can do?
Sorry for my English. I used the Google translator.
I got 3 display working in Linux. I have set it up so I have Xinerama and 3 different X sessions. So my 3 displays are not all the same size, two are 1680x1050 and then the other which is between the two is 2560x1600. So my issue is when I chose span, even if the image is larger than all 3 resolutions combined, the center monitor has bars at the top and the bottom because span scales the image it seems. Is there a way if I bypass the gui to have an image span all three monitors but with no scaling?
Urgent! Please help! ;-)
I've had an issue since upgrading my distro a couple of weeks ago from hardy; receiving data after making a request has increasing intervals of nothing, as you can see from the picture below.
http://i49.tinypic.com/2w5lvr9.png
I have since reinstalled fresh from an Ubuntu 10.04 Server (i386) disk, but am still having the same issues. I'm running on a LigHTTPd, MySQL, PHP5 stack. The surprising thing is, that local browsing using lynx is super fast, as expected. Initially, after reinstalling, I copied over the old configuration files from the previous installation, but have since reinstalled LigHTTPd and rebuilt the config file from scratch. The only correlation I could find, was that I attempted installation of ionCube and Zend Optimizer for a script I was testing, however I would think that it could no longer impact seeing I had reinstalled the OS. I have also removed Suhosin just in case, however it had no impact.
I'm thinking it possibly has something to do with networking, but I wouldn't know where to start. The server is manually assigned an IP by it's MAC address on the router.
The fact that the time seems to be exponential (to a point) worries me. I've tried strace'ing the LigHTTPd and MySQL processes, however I couldn't see anything obvious, not that I'd really know what I'm looking for. RAM and CPU usage don't seem to be out of the ordinary, but I can't say its perfect..
I'm hoping someone has experienced the same, or can point me in a direction, as searching has proved fruitless as I don't know anything specific. Config files can be posted, if requested.
This seemed to happen out of the blue.
I have been using Opera for years.
I can't find anywhere in Gmail to change the default font that is used in Opera.
Ubuntu is Version 11
Opera is version 11.6
In Firefox the font is normal size.
I have tried playing around with both all the browser setting I can find plus Ubuntu system settings (I had seen some mentions of Opera using the system default font sometimes) but no success so far.
Really bumming as I have been using Opera for two years and if I can't resolve it I will not be able to use it.
I can switch to Firefox but I don't want to.
<b>Click:</b> "At the recommendation of reader David Gurvich, as well as the enthusiastic endorsement of "Linux Outlaws" co-host Fabian A. Scherschel and Larry "the Free Software Guy" Cafiero, I burned my first Fedora disc in some time and am testing Fedora 12 in the live environment."
I think I tried everything I could but I still can't get my Nvidia GTX 260 to run on the newest ubuntu 9.10 x64.
Update: I was able to stop the gdm with sudo service gdm stop
However, after downloading the latest driver from nvdia - I am told that my video card is not supported.
I typically have 2-3 OSes in my boot menu:
Ubuntu 10.04
Windows 7
[Sometimes, a third option, such as Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook]
If I am in an OS other than the default choice (Windows 7 in this case), and I reboot, Grub boots into Ubuntu 10.04. This shouldn't happen--when I reboot in Windows 7, I want to stay in Windows 7. Is there any way to configure Grub to remember my last choice, and boot into that?
Alternatively, it would be even better if Grub only did this when I rebooted (not when I first turn the computer on). I realize this may not be possible, so I'd be happy with simple last-choice-remembering.
I'm currently migrating to openbox without gnome session. In unity i can use the vendor keys to set the screen brightness, but in openbox I'm on my own.
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness works fine, the problem is that I need sudo to set the brightness and that wouldn't work with keyboard mappings.
xbacklight -get/set doesn't do or output anything.
I don't really want to use xrandr --brightness.
Are there any other options or a way to fix the problems with xbacklight or acpi_video0 ?
